On July 21, 1963, Greg Behrendt was born in San Francisco, California. He was interested in dramatic arts and enjoyed playing rugby and other sports throughout high school, though he did not pursue this interest to the fullest extent until college. He intended to study business when he enrolled at the University of Oregon. But in the end, he graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts in drama.
Following her college graduation, Behrendt settled in San Francisco. He met fellow comedian Margaret Cho there after joining an improv comedy group. As a member of the improv group Crash and Burn, he gave comedy and improv performances in San Francisco throughout the early years of his career. Cho was one of the troupe members as well. He also got to know and perform with comedians Patton Oswalt and David Cross around this same period. For a while, Behrendt and Cross shared a room as well.
He gained more and more chances to compete on a national scale as his comic abilities grew. Initially, he secured comedic roles on “The Tonight Show” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” He started creating his own stand-up specials by the middle of the 2000s. Comedy Central broadcast his debut special, “Greg Behrendt is Uncool,” in January 2006. He had an appearance on “Celebrity Poker Showdown” in June of 2006. He gave all of his money to a foundation that fights domestic abuse.
His midday talk program, “The Greg Behrendt Show,” debuted on Superstition WGN in September 2006. Behrendt, the show’s host, frequently welcomed couples as guests and talked with them about a range of relationship-related topics. The show’s other episodes centered on providing visitors makeovers. The program was canceled in January 2007 and its last episodes aired in February of the same year. Up until September of that year, reruns of the show were broadcast.
Behrendt also produced “Greg Behrendt’s Wake-Up Call,” an ABC midseason show for the 2006–2007 television season. In the end, the show was never broadcast by the network. But it debuted on SoapNet, ABC’s sibling cable network, in January 2009. He also made a special appearance at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2010. He took engaged in a discussion on whether food or sex was preferable during the festival. Alongside him on the team were comedians Russell Kane of England and Cal Wilson of New Zealand. The event was won by his squad.
2009 saw the publication of Behrendt’s second comedy special, “That Guy From That Thing.” “Original Uncool,” a newly edited special that he released in 2011, re-released a large portion of the content from his debut special, “Greg Behrendt is Uncool.” Not until 2018 did he release “Why Are You In Here?” as his next special.
Behrendt has enjoyed success as a writer in addition to his career as a comedian. Co-authors Liz Tuccillo and Behrendt collaborated on the 2004 self-help book “He’s Just Not That Into you.” The next year saw the publication of “Pocket Guide to He’s Just Not That Into You: The No-excuses Truth to Understanding Guys.” Later, Flower Films, Drew Barrymore’s production firm, turned the original book into a script. Following a few years, the pair penned “It’s Just a Date: How to Get ’em, How to Read ’em, and How to Rock ’em.” The United Kingdom saw the book’s release. 2018 saw the release of “How to Keep Your Marriage from Sucking: The Keys to Keep Your Wedlock Out of Deadlock.”
Behrendt also served as a writing consultant for the HBO series “Sex and the City” in the early 2000s. Considering that the show’s plotline frequently revolved around the interactions between the female characters and straight males, and that the script was produced by a group of largely women and gay men, he frequently provided notes from the viewpoint of a straight guy.
Behrendt and fellow comedian Dave Anthony launched the comedy podcast “Walking the Room” in 2010. Though they occasionally have guests, the main focus of the show is the two hosts’ chats. The podcast took a long break in July 2014 when Behrendt was employed in New York City. October, a few months later, marked the official end of it.
