Early Life of Sandara Park

On November 12, 1984, in Busan, South Korea, Sandara Park was born. Kim Yu-sin, a general in the 7th century, had a childhood nickname that inspired her name, which translates to “wise and clever”. She was raised alongside Thunder and Durami, her two siblings. In 1993, her family relocated to Daegu. But in 1994, the family was unable to make ends meet, so they relocated to the Philippines. Park first struggled since she could not speak the language and found it difficult to make friends. But she put a lot of effort into learning the language since she wanted to become well-known there eventually. Later, after meeting another woman, her father broke away from the family. Park was then forced to start working to support the family.

Career in Music

Park got to know Pauleen Luna, a Filipina actress, in 2004. Park was urged by Luna to try out for the TV talent competition “Star Circle Quest.” In the end, Park came in second in the competition. She signed a deal with Star Magic, an ABS-CBN subsidiary, following the show. She co-starred with Hero Angeles in her debut movie, “Bcuz of You,” in 2004. Angeles had triumphed in “Star Circle Quest.” She was the recipient of the 21st PMPC Star Award for Movies’ Best New Actress award for her performance. In 2005, she worked with Angeles once more on the movie “Can This Be Love.” She made an appearance in “D’Lucky Ones” in 2006. Her fourth movie, “Super Noypi,” was an approved submission for the 32nd Metro Manila Film Festival the same year.

At this time, Park was also advancing her musical career. She dropped her six-track self-titled album, “Sandara.” Included on the CD was the novelty dance smash “In or Out.” The musical composition mocked her time spent on “Star Circle Quest.” Park is the only South Korean artist with an album certified platinum by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry, having sold over 100,000 physical copies of the record.

Sandara Park

Park and her family returned to South Korea in 2007. She and YG Entertainment inked a deal. Along with Bom, CL, and Minzy, she made her K-pop girl group debut in 2009 under the stage name Dara. “Lollipop,” their first promotional track, was a joint effort with labelmates Big Bang. Soon after, they made their official debut with “Fire,” their first song. They released “2NE1,” their debut EP, in the same year. The song “I Don’t Care” from the EP was named Song of the Year at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

2009 saw Park make her solo Korean debut as well. The first track she released as a solo artist was “Kiss.” The song was featured in a promotional video for Cass Beer, in which Park and Lee Min-ho starred. The kissing sequence between the two artists made the video popular, and the song went on to become extremely successful. During this period, 2NE1 also kept releasing singles including “I Am the Best,” “I Love You,” and “Falling in Love.” The latter song reached the top of the US “Billboard” World Digital Songs chart and was also quite popular there.

Career in Acting

Park made a comeback to the Philippines in 2014 to appear as a guest star on “Pinoy Big Brother.” She also made an appearance on a few talk shows across the nation, and because she was still highly well-liked there, her appearances there caused a social media frenzy. She also made an appearance in a three-part mini web series starring Steven Yeun that same year. In a matter of days, the humorous sketch received over a million views after becoming viral.

Later, she starred in the web drama “We Broke Up,” which was well-received by both fans and reviewers. She was also chosen for the romantic comedy “Missing Korea,” which was released that same year and is set in a future where North and South Korea are attempting to unite. In 2015–2016, she also appeared in the variety show “Sugar Man”.

After that, she starred in the action movie “107th Year of Night.” She debuted musically in 2020 with the staging of the drama “Another Oh Hae-young.” An announcement was made in March 2021 regarding her involvement in the interactive sitcom “ON AIR – The Secret Contract.” It was revealed a few months later that Park had departed YG Entertainment since her contract had ended. She and Abyss Company inked an exclusive contract in September 2021. In 2023, she revealed that she would be releasing an extended play in Korean called “Sandara Park.”
