Why finding genuine exporters is difficult
India has more than 1.5 lakh registered exporters, but only a fraction of them are the actual manufacturers behind the products you see online. Most global buyers start with a search engine or a directory, and within minutes they are talking to three kinds of companies: real manufacturers, merchant exporters who buy from factories, and pure middlemen with no trade infrastructure at all. All three look identical on a listing page. The difference shows up only later โ in pricing, in lead times, and in whether your order actually ships.
The second problem is verification theatre. Many platforms sell a "gold" or "premium" badge that only proves the seller paid a subscription. It says nothing about GST status, factory capacity, or export history. Buyers who assume a paid badge equals due diligence are the ones who end up chasing refunds.
Red flags to watch out for
1. Prices far below the market. If a supplier quotes 25-30% under every other quote you have, the product spec is different, the quantity is not what you asked for, or the deal is not real.
2. Pressure for a full advance to a personal bank account. Legitimate Indian exporters accept LC, 30% advance with balance against BL copy, or escrow. A request for 100% TT to an account name that does not match the company name is the single strongest fraud signal.
3. No GSTIN or IEC on request. Every legal Indian exporter has a GST number and an Importer Exporter Code. Refusal to share either is disqualifying.
4. A generic email address and no landline. A supplier doing 5 crore in exports has a domain email.
5. Stock photos of products. Ask for photos of the actual production line with today's date written on a sheet of paper in the frame. Genuine factories send them within a day.
6. Vague answers on MOQ, HS code, or packing details. A real manufacturer answers these instantly because they live with them daily.
How to verify an Indian supplier
Start with documents. Ask for GSTIN, IEC, PAN of the company, and a copy of the Certificate of Incorporation. Verify the GSTIN on the government GST portal โ it will show the legal name, registration date, and status. A GSTIN registered three weeks ago on a company claiming twenty years of exports is a mismatch worth an explanation.
Next, check trade history. Ask for two recent shipping bills or bills of lading with commercially sensitive figures blacked out. Exporters who ship regularly produce these without hesitation. Also ask which ports they normally load from: Mundra, Nhava Sheva, Chennai, Kolkata. Vague answers here matter.
Then check capacity. Ask for monthly production volume, number of machines or lines, and number of workers. Cross-check that against your order size. A unit with 40 workers cannot deliver 12 containers in three weeks, no matter what the quotation says.
Finally, order a paid sample before your first bulk order and pay for it properly. A sample invoice with the same company name, GST number and bank details you were given earlier is a cheap and highly effective consistency check.
Best platforms to find verified exporters
Government sources are the most reliable starting point: the DGFT exporter database, EPC (Export Promotion Council) member directories for your category, and APEDA for agricultural products. These are slow but authoritative.
B2B marketplaces are faster and give you comparable quotes side by side, which is where most price discovery actually happens. Trade fairs โ India International Trade Fair, IndiaMART-hosted expos, category fairs like Vibrant Gujarat or the Textile India expo โ remain the best way to meet factory owners face to face.
The practical approach most experienced importers use is a combination: shortlist on a marketplace, verify against government records, then confirm with a sample and a video factory walkthrough.
How Today Adviser verification works
On Today Adviser, a verified badge is not a subscription. Before a supplier can carry it we check the GSTIN against the official registry, confirm the IEC, match the legal entity name to the bank account name used for quotations, and review at least one recent export document. Companies that cannot produce these stay listed but unverified, and that status is visible to every buyer.
Buyers can also post a buy requirement instead of contacting suppliers one by one. Verified manufacturers in the relevant category respond with quotes, typically within 24 hours, and you compare them in one place. If you want an extra layer, our sourcing and audit services include a physical factory visit and a photo report before you release payment.
The rule that saves the most money is simple: verify the entity, verify the capacity, then verify the sample โ in that order, and always before the first wire transfer.
