Top Basmati Rice Exporters from India — Complete Guide 2026
India supplies roughly two-thirds of the world''s traded basmati rice, and demand from the Gulf, Iran, the UK, the US and East Africa keeps growing. For a first-time buyer, the challenge is not finding rice exporters — there are thousands — but finding a miller who can hold a consistent grain length, moisture level and pesticide profile shipment after shipment. Where basmati actually comes from Basmati is grown in the Indo-Gangetic plain: Haryana, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and parts of Delhi. Only rice grown in these notified areas can legally be sold as basmati under Indian GI rules. Milling and export clusters follow the growing belt: Karnal and Kaithal (Haryana) — the largest concentration of modern basmati mills, strong in 1121 and 1509 varieties. Amritsar and Taran Taran (Punjab) — traditional basmati and Pusa varieties. Delhi NCR (Narela, Bahadurgarh) — trading and re-packing hubs with strong export documentation experience. Kandla and Mundra (Gujarat) — not growing regions, but the ports through which most Gulf-bound rice actually loads. Varieties and what buyers ask for 1121 Sella and Steam is the volume workhorse: average grain length after cooking of 18-20 mm, favoured across the Middle East. 1509 cooks faster and costs less, popular where price sensitivity is high. Pusa Basmati suits buyers who want a mid-tier product. Traditional Basmati commands the highest price and is usually aged 12-24 months before export, mainly for premium retail in the UK, US and Europe. Specify the processing type clearly: raw, steam, sella (parboiled), or golden sella. Two quotations that look far apart usually differ on this line rather than on quality. Typical commercial terms MOQ is normally one 20-foot container, about 24-26 MT depending on packing. Common packing is 5 kg, 10 kg, 20 kg and 40 kg PP bags or jute, with private-label printing available at most mills for a plate cost. Payment is usually 20-30% advance with the balance against a scanned bill of lading, or an irrevocable LC at sight for larger orders. Lead time runs 15-25 days after order confirmation, longer during the October-January peak after the new crop arrives. Quality documentation you should insist on A pre-shipment inspection certificate, a phytosanitary certificate, a certificate of origin, and — critically for the EU and UK — a pesticide residue report from a NABL-accredited lab covering tricyclazole, buprofezin and thiamethoxam. Rejections at European ports are almost always residue-related, not quality-related. Buyers importing into the Gulf should also confirm halal certification and the shelf-life declaration required by the destination authority. How to shortlist a basmati exporter Ask for the mill''s daily processing capacity in MT, whether the sortex and colour-sorting is in-house, how long the paddy is aged, and which markets they already ship to. A mill that has been shipping to Saudi Arabia for five years already knows SFDA labelling; one that has not will learn on your shipment. Always order a 2 kg sample from the exact lot they intend to ship, cook it yourself, and measure the elongation ratio. Then confirm the same lot number appears on the pre-shipment inspection report. On Today Adviser, you can browse verified agriculture and rice exporters by city, compare quotes from several mills for the same specification, and post a buy requirement that reaches every verified basmati supplier in the category at once. Most buyers receive their first quotes within 24 hours.
