What is MOQ?
Minimum Order Quantity is the minimum quantity a supplier is prepared to sell or manufacture under a particular quotation or product configuration. MOQ can vary by product, material, colour, packaging, customisation, print, size, production method and price agreement. It is therefore not simply a logistics number. It can be part of the supplier's commercial pricing model because fixed production or setup costs are easier to recover across larger orders.
For an importer or wholesaler, MOQ should be considered together with demand, available cash, storage capacity and target landed cost. Ordering more units can reduce the average production or sourcing cost, but it also increases inventory exposure. A large MOQ is not automatically better just because the unit price is lower. How to calculate total MOQ order value
The simplest order-value formula is quantity multiplied by unit price. If the supplier gives a percentage discount, apply the discount to the product subtotal before adding order-level costs. A practical expanded planning formula is: product subtotal minus discount, plus setup or tooling, plus inspection, plus freight, plus other order costs.
Example: a supplier quotes 1,000 units at $8 per unit. The product subtotal is $8,000. If the supplier gives a 5% volume discount, the product discount is $400 and the discounted product value becomes $7,600. If tooling is $200, inspection is $100 and shipping is $500, the modeled order value becomes $8,400 before any additional costs that were not entered. MOQ vs planned order quantity
MOQ and your actual order quantity are not always the same. You can order exactly at MOQ, order above MOQ, or sometimes negotiate below MOQ. This tool makes that distinction explicit. MOQ mistakes buyers should avoid
A common mistake is comparing suppliers only by unit price while ignoring the MOQ. Supplier A may quote $7.50 per unit at 5,000 units while Supplier B quotes $7.90 at 1,000 units.
