Forward rate vs spot rate
The spot rate is the exchange rate associated with a current foreign-exchange transaction. A forward rate is a rate agreed for settlement at a future date or period. They are not expected to be identical. The forward rate incorporates market pricing for the future settlement period, including interest-rate differentials and other pricing factors, while a bank may add its own spread or charges.

Hedging an export receivable: practical example
Suppose an Indian exporter expects to receive USD 100,000 after 90 days. The current spot rate is ₹84.00 and the bank offers a forward rate of ₹84.60. The exporter chooses to hedge 75% and leaves 25% open. If the eventual spot rate is ₹82.00, the hedged amount is modeled at ₹84.60 while the open amount uses ₹82.00.
The result is not simply “profit” or “loss.” The forward has reduced uncertainty. In a stronger-dollar scenario, the exporter may have received more rupees on the unhedged portion than under the forward. In a weaker-dollar scenario, the hedge can protect the hedged portion from the decline. The correct benchmark is the business's objective: certainty, budget rate, minimum margin or some other approved treasury target.
Use several future-rate scenarios rather than one prediction. For example, test ₹80, ₹82, ₹84, ₹86 and ₹88. This shows how sensitive your rupee realization is to currency movement and how much of the exposure remains open at each hedge ratio.
Export pricing and currency risk
Currency risk should be considered when an exporter quotes a fixed foreign-currency selling price. Forward contracts for Indian exporters
RBI materials describe forward foreign-exchange contracts as a permitted hedging instrument for eligible foreign-currency exposures, subject to applicable requirements. Do not interpret break-even as a market forecast. Currency markets can move for many reasons and the future rate is unknown. Instead, use the break-even level alongside a range of scenarios. If the business is more concerned with avoiding a bad outcome than maximizing a potentially favorable one, the value of the hedge is partly the reduction in uncertainty, not merely a point estimate of profit.
