India Customs Duty Calculator

Importing goods into India can involve multiple customs duty components instead of one flat percentage. The India Customs Duty Calculator above lets you estimate the main components using your assessable value and the rates applicable to your product. It is designed for import planning, supplier comparison, landed-cost estimation and preliminary budgeting.

What is an India Customs Duty Calculator?

An India Customs Duty Calculator is a planning tool used to estimate the customs taxes payable when goods are imported into India. ICEGATE provides an official Customs Duty Calculator for calculating applicable customs duty, and its import enquiry system allows users to search using a Customs Tariff Heading, description and country of origin where relevant. Open the official ICEGATE Customs Duty Calculator.

What this calculator includes

The calculation can include Basic Customs Duty (BCD), Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS), IGST, additional customs duties and other cess entered by the user. ICEGATE's duty-structure interface lists components such as BCD, Social Welfare Surcharge, anti-dumping duty, safeguard duty, countervailing duty, IGST and compensation cess. Your actual assessment depends on the applicable tariff, notification, exemption and product classification.

Basic Customs Duty (BCD)

BCD is the core customs duty component applied to imported goods according to the applicable tariff classification and notifications. The rate is not universal, so the tool uses a user-entered BCD percentage instead of pretending there is one rate for every imported product.

Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS)

SWS can apply as a surcharge on applicable customs duty. This calculator represents it as a percentage of BCD, which makes the result easy to inspect component by component. Always verify whether SWS applies to the particular duty component and whether any exemption or special treatment is relevant.

IGST on imported goods

IGST is an important part of the import tax calculation. For estimation, this tool applies the entered IGST rate to the assessable value plus the entered customs-duty components. The actual legal base and any exceptions should be checked against the current customs assessment and applicable law before payment.

Why HSN or CTH matters

Customs duty is closely linked to tariff classification. ICEGATE's import enquiry system supports searching by tariff head or description, and country of origin can be relevant for preferential duty or anti-dumping considerations. That is why this tool includes optional HSN/CTH and origin fields as reference inputs.

How to calculate customs duty on imports into India

  1. Determine the correct HSN/CTH classification.
  2. Confirm the country of origin and whether a preferential notification or trade agreement applies.
  3. Determine the assessable value used for Customs.
  4. Enter the applicable BCD rate.
  5. Enter the applicable SWS rate.
  6. Enter the applicable IGST rate.
  7. Add any product-specific customs duty or cess that genuinely applies.
  8. Review the component-wise result and verify it against current ICEGATE tariff information.

Assessable value vs invoice value

Your commercial invoice value should not automatically be treated as the final assessable value for every import. Customs valuation can require specific adjustments and the applicable customs exchange rate. For that reason, the calculator offers a direct assessable-value mode as the safer estimation route, plus an optional CIF-style estimate when you already know the relevant inputs.

Additional customs duties

Some products can attract measures such as anti-dumping duty, safeguard duty, countervailing measures or other notification-based levies. ICEGATE's duty details can display these categories where applicable. Do not enter an additional rate simply because the field exists; use it only after checking the applicable tariff or notification.

Example calculation

For illustration, suppose the assessable value is ₹100,000, BCD is 10%, SWS is 10% of BCD and IGST is 18%, with no additional duties or cess. The calculator first works out BCD, then SWS, and then estimates IGST on the resulting customs-tax base. Your actual payable duty can be different because classification, origin, exemptions and notifications vary by import.

Who should use this tool?

  • Procurement teams comparing overseas supplier quotes.
  • Finance teams budgeting for import tax.
  • Exporters or sellers estimating the buyer's Indian import burden.
  • Freight forwarders and logistics teams preparing preliminary shipment estimates.
