What is chargeable weight?
Chargeable weight is the weight used as the billing basis after comparing the shipment's actual gross weight with its dimensional or volumetric weight under the applicable carrier rule. For air cargo, the common planning formula with centimetre dimensions is length × width × height ÷ 6,000 for each piece, multiplied by the number of identical pieces.
Actual weight vs volumetric weight
Actual weight is what the packed shipment weighs on the scale. Volumetric weight is a space-based calculation derived from the outer dimensions. When volumetric weight is higher, a carrier may charge on that higher figure. When actual weight is higher, the actual weight generally becomes the chargeable basis, subject to the carrier's own rounding and rating rules.
Air freight volumetric weight formula
For the common centimetre-and-kilogram air-freight convention, volumetric weight in kilograms is calculated as length × width × height ÷ 6,000.
