What does CBM mean in shipping?
CBM means cubic metre. It is a volume measurement used to describe the amount of physical space occupied by cargo. Freight businesses use CBM in shipment planning, especially when cargo is moved as consolidated ocean freight or when space utilization matters for a full container.
A rectangular shipping carton can be represented by three dimensions: length, width and height. Once those dimensions are in a consistent unit, the carton volume can be determined. When there are many identical cartons, the volume of one carton is multiplied by its quantity.
What should I enter for length, width and height?
Enter the outside dimensions of the packed shipping unit. If the product is inside a carton, measure the outer carton, not the product inside it. If the cargo is palletized, use the outside dimensions of the completed palletized load when your freight quote is based on pallet dimensions.
For a normal upright carton, length is usually the main horizontal dimension, width is the other horizontal dimension and height is the vertical dimension. The exact naming convention does not change the volume calculation as long as the three dimensions are the correct outside dimensions and use the same unit.
Which unit should I use: cm, inches, metres or feet?
Use the unit supplied by your manufacturer, packer or warehouse, as long as you select the same unit in the calculator. Centimetres are convenient for many export cartons, while inches and feet are common in some markets. Metres can be useful for larger cargo.
The calculator converts the selected unit automatically, so you do not have to manually convert centimetres into metres. The important rule is simple: do not mix units within one package measurement.
Why gross weight matters
CBM tells you about space; gross weight tells you about the actual mass of the packed shipment. A freight quote can depend on both. A light but bulky shipment may be more space-sensitive, while a dense shipment may be more weight-sensitive.
Enter the gross weight of the packed package rather than the net product weight when you are preparing a freight enquiry. Gross shipment weight normally includes the product and packaging associated with the shipment unit.
What is volumetric or dimensional weight?
Volumetric weight, also called dimensional weight, converts cargo volume into an equivalent weight for transport pricing. It is particularly relevant in air freight and courier services where the carrier may compare actual and dimensional weight under its own pricing rules.

What is chargeable weight?
Chargeable weight is the weight a carrier or logistics provider uses for pricing under the applicable shipping rule. In many air-freight scenarios it can be based on the higher of actual gross weight and dimensional weight. Courier services can have their own rounding, minimums and dimensional formulas.
Sea LCL pricing works differently and can be based on shipment volume or weight under the service's tariff. Therefore, the tool's chargeable-weight view should be treated as planning guidance rather than a guaranteed freight invoice.
CBM for LCL shipments
LCL stands for less-than-container load. Instead of reserving an entire container, the cargo is consolidated with other shipments. Cargo volume becomes an important commercial input because the space occupied by the shipment has to be allocated within the shared load.
For an LCL quote, provide your forwarder with the number of packages, package type, dimensions, total CBM, total gross weight, origin, destination and any special cargo requirements. A clear package list usually produces a better starting point than simply telling a forwarder the product name.
CBM for FCL shipments
FCL means full-container load. The calculator gives approximate container-fill information for common container types so you can see the scale of your cargo before contacting a forwarder.
Do not interpret a high percentage as a guarantee that the cargo will physically fit. Actual loading depends on package shape, stacking, weight distribution, palletization, container dimensions, loading restrictions and the final loading plan.
Mixed carton sizes: why they matter
Many real export shipments contain mixed packaging. A buyer may have 50 cartons of one size and 20 cartons of another. Treating the entire shipment as if every carton were the same can create a significant CBM error.
That is why this calculator allows separate package types. Add one row for each different carton, pallet or crate size. The result then combines the package types into one shipment total.
How to calculate CBM for a carton
Suppose a carton is 60 cm long, 40 cm wide and 50 cm high. That packed carton occupies 0.12 cubic metres. If you have 20 identical cartons, the shipment volume is 2.40 CBM. The calculator performs the unit conversion and quantity multiplication for you.
If another 10 cartons are 80 ร 40 ร 50 cm, calculate that package type separately and add it to the shipment total. This is more reliable than averaging the two carton sizes before doing the calculation.
CBM and container capacity
Container specifications are often shown using approximate cubic capacities, but there is a difference between nominal internal volume and the volume you can practically load. Cargo shape and loading configuration can leave unusable gaps.

Why freight forwarders ask for both CBM and weight
Forwarders need enough information to determine which rate structure and service applies. A shipment with 6 CBM and 500 kg has a very different logistics profile from a shipment with 6 CBM and 4,000 kg.
