What is a pallet calculator?

A useful calculator should not assume that one orientation is automatically best. If the carton is rectangular, rotating it on the pallet can produce a different floor count.

How do you calculate cartons per pallet?
Start by comparing how many cartons fit across the pallet in each orientation. In one arrangement, divide pallet length by carton length and pallet width by carton width, taking the whole-number result in each direction. In the rotated arrangement, swap the carton length and width. Multiply the two whole-number counts to get the cartons per layer for each option, then choose the higher practical result.
For example, a 120 ร 80 cm pallet and a 40 ร 30 cm carton can produce a different floor count depending on orientation. The calculator performs both simple orientations automatically. It does not rotate cartons diagonally, allow complex interlocking patterns or model mixed carton sizes, so the result remains transparent and easy to audit.
Why carton orientation matters on a pallet
A small change in orientation can save floor space. Suppose one orientation fits three cartons across one side and two along the other, while the rotated arrangement fits four across and two along the other. The second arrangement can produce more cartons per layer without changing the carton itself. This matters across a full export order because one additional carton per layer can reduce the number of pallets required.
Orientation is not only about mathematical fit. The warehouse may require a specific stacking direction for product stability, label visibility, carton strength or safe handling. A pattern that produces the maximum count on paper may not be the pattern your operations team chooses. The calculator therefore gives a planning result, not a mandatory loading instruction.
How pallet height affects carton capacity
Pallet height is the sum of the empty pallet base plus the stacked carton height. If a pallet is 15 cm high and six layers of 25 cm cartons are placed on it, the loaded height is 165 cm. If the maximum permitted loaded height is 160 cm, six layers would not fit and the calculator would reduce the layer count.
Height can matter for warehouse racking, truck loading, container doors, double-stacking rules and stability. Some buyers or logistics providers provide a maximum total pallet height. Others specify a clear space above the pallet or restrictions on how high cartons can be stacked. Enter the actual operational limit rather than using a generic number.
How pallet weight limits change the answer
Floor and height space are not the only limits. A pallet can have a gross-weight capacity that restricts the number of cartons even when the cartons physically fit. Gross pallet weight is approximately carton gross weight multiplied by the number of cartons plus the empty pallet weight.
For example, if each carton weighs 8 kg and a pallet weighs 25 kg, 100 cartons would create 825 kg gross pallet weight. If the maximum gross pallet weight is 800 kg, the weight limit would be exceeded even if the cartons fit by floor area and height. The calculator therefore checks weight separately and uses the more restrictive capacity.
What is pallet CBM?
Pallet CBM is the cubic-metre volume occupied by a loaded pallet based on its external footprint and total loaded height. A practical planning formula is pallet length in metres ร pallet width in metres ร total loaded height in metres ร pallet quantity. Logistics teams may use this number when comparing palletized LCL, warehouse, truck or other freight space requirements.
For palletized cargo, the pallet CBM can be higher than the sum of the carton volumes because the pallet footprint and the full loaded height include gaps, arrangement space and the pallet itself. Pallet calculator for export shipments
For exporters, pallet planning is useful before requesting freight quotes. Your forwarder may ask for the number of pallets, dimensions, total gross weight and total CBM. Those figures can then influence LCL pricing, FCL planning, road-truck space and sometimes air-cargo handling decisions.
Use the final packed dimensions rather than the product's naked dimensions. Cartons become larger after protective packaging, inserts, labels or external reinforcement are added. Similarly, the palletized shipment should reflect the actual loaded pallet height, including the pallet base where the carrier or warehouse measures total height.
Pallet calculator for importers and warehouses
Importers can use the same calculation in reverse. Before goods arrive, estimate how many pallets will be required from the supplier's carton dimensions and order quantity. This helps with warehouse space, receiving plans, racking decisions and domestic transportation requirements.
For warehouse planning, a partial pallet matters. A shipment of 120 cartons might create several full pallets plus a final pallet containing fewer cartons. The final partial pallet still occupies a physical footprint, so simply dividing carton quantity by cartons per pallet and rounding the result is only the first step. A pallet plan and a container-loading plan are related but not identical. A carton arrangement that is efficient on a pallet may not produce the most efficient arrangement inside a container. Palletized LCL cargo may be quoted or handled differently from loose cartons because the logistics provider has to move a palletized unit rather than individual cartons. The final shipment CBM and gross weight remain important, but local handling and warehouse requirements can also matter.

Pallet height, overhang and clearance
The mathematical floor calculation assumes cartons fit entirely inside the pallet footprint in a simple rectangular arrangement. Real warehouses may have an overhang rule, underhang restrictions or a requirement that cartons remain fully supported by the pallet deck. A carrier or buyer can also specify maximum dimensions that differ from your pallet dimensions.
